Book Review: Windows Lockdown by Andy Walker
If you want to learn how to protect your PC in this modern Internet based world. Then Windows Lockdown:Your XP and Vista Guide Against Hacks, Attacks, and Other Internet Mayhem by Andy Walker is an invaluable guide. First off, I have to admit a lot of it isn’t new to me, since one of my best friends has been an IT professional at a large Hospital back East for over 30 years and had told me a lot of this stuff already.
The tips include such things as keeping two anti-spyware programs, so that one can catch things the other one may not (I use Ad Aware and A Squared) and making sure you have a good Anti Virus program and keep it updated at least once a week, if not more frequently. Also to have a good software firewall program to minimize outside attacks on your computers. Even if you have a Wireless Network Router that has built in NAT, which is kind of like an inbuilt hardware firewall, it’s still a good idea to have a software firewall.
The book is full of other advice on minimizing your online risks. Walker also talks about how to educate your kids to not download potential viral or worm loaded programs through P2P networks by accident, as they can be embedded in harmless video or MP3s. He also goes into great detail into the difference between Viruses, Worms, Trojan Horses, and other Malware, which were several distinctions I didn’t completely grasp prior to reading this book.
This book is an essential read for anyone who wants to keep their computer relatively safe these days, although he does go on to say that there are situations where someone very determined might still be able to get through and hack your computer, even if you follow all of the advice in the book to the letter.
I also thought the authors name was familiar. Turns out he was a co-host on Tech TV’s late lamented Call for Help program along with Leo LaPorte. Windows Lockdown is Highly Recommended for anyone who owns, or is thinking about owning a computer.
